Bakery Waste: A promising unconventional feed ingredient for Poultry

Abstract
Poultry is one of the vibrant and/or organized agricultural sectors, which has been rising at a rate of 8-10% per annum in India. Its meat is an important affordable protein bearing superior amino acid profile which is popular amongst both low income as well as higher income groups besides having no religious taboo. Feeding is the most significant aspect in poultry production like any other livestock enterprise. The escalating growth of the poultry sector necessitates the demand for increase in poultry feed industry also. The principle energy source used for preparing poultry feed is cereal grains specially maize, which has huge demand by humans too. It increases the competition between humans and poultry species for sustaining and support to the life that also affects the rates of cereal grains. Thus, there is dire need to look for alternative energy sources. Among various unconventional feeds, bakery waste is rich in non-fibrous carbohydrates and is a good energy source. The dried bakery products available at throw away prices throughout the country, as leftover of bakery products are not used for human consumption and is comparatively economical than maize. It may substitute cereal grains for the formulation of poultry ration.
