PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF QUAILS WITH IRON SUPPLEMENTATION

Abstract
In order to evaluate the significance of iron supplementation on performance, 120 quail birds (unsexed, 7 days old) were randomly allotted to three groups (n=40 birds/ group), each group has 4 replicates of 10 birds each. Although, all the birds were fed maize-soya based basal ration, but additionally T2 and T3 groups were supplemented with iron in powder (as dietary supplement) and liquid form in drinking water @ 500 g/tonne and 10 ml/100 birds, respectively from 7th to 35th day of trial. Results revealed that body weight, body weight gain, feed intake and FCR remained unaffected by iron supplementation (P>0.05). Also, no significant effect on total protein was observed, but iron supplementation significantly (P<0.05) increased blood haemoglobin (Hb) values (11.28 vs. 12.83 and 13.52 g/litre in T1, T2 and T3, respectively). Further, Cost:Benefit ratio in T1, T2 and T3 was 1.33, 1.51 and 1.55, respectively. It may be concluded that iron supplementation has no effect on growth traits, but an improvement in Hb values and cost benefit ratio was observed in quail birds.
