Abstract
To evaluate the replacement level of bakery biscuit waste (BBW) as maize substitute, three hundred day-old straight run broiler chicks were allocated into five treatment groups namely T0 (maize-soybean based basal ration, containing no BBW), T1 (5% maize flakes, MF were replaced with BBW), T2 (10% MF replaced with BBW), T3 (15% MF replaced with BBW) and T4 (20% MF replaced with BBW). These replacements were made throughout the trial (6 weeks) in such a fashion that all diets formulated were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. There were four replicates in each dietary group (n=60 birds per group; 15 birds per replicate). Results revealed that feed intake (FI, g) remained unaffected during the first two weeks, but was significantly (P<0.05) higher in T0, T1 and T2 groups, starting from 3rd week onwards. Likewise, weight gain was significantly higher (P<0.05) in T0, T1 and T2 groups and FCR was observed better up to 10% BBW inclusion as maize substitute. At the 6th week, PER was found to be higher in T0, T1 and T2, but no noticeable difference was observed during 1st, 3rd and 5th week. However, the metabolizability of nutrients showed no change, irrespective of different inclusion levels of BBW. It may be inferred that BBW can be safely incorporated in broiler ration up to 10% as maize substitute without any adverse effects.

Key words: Broiler, bakery biscuit waste, maize replacement.
